Homemade Syrup Gifts: Gift Sets, Bottles and Labels

Homemade syrup is a thoughtful, low-cost holiday gift. Pick long-keeping syrups, bottle them in 8 oz swing-tops, label with the date and keep them cold.

Homemade syrup is one of the easiest holiday gifts to make in bulk: one afternoon and a few dollars of sugar fill a dozen bottles. Choose syrups that keep at least 3 weeks, bottle them in clean 8 oz glass swing-tops, and label each with the flavor, date and "keep refrigerated." Make them within a week of giving, and keep them in the fridge until then.

Choose syrups that keep

A gift may sit in someone's fridge for a while before they open it, so favor syrups with a long shelf life and skip the most fragile ones.

Skip syrups with purée or fresh soft herbs, like pumpkin spice, basil or mint, for gifts. They last only a week or so.

Gift set ideas

Three small bottles with a theme feel more generous than one big bottle, and let the recipient try a few flavors.

Coffee syrup gift set

Vanilla, gingerbread and peppermint cover a whole season of lattes. Add a bag of good coffee beans, a mug, or a pump bottle for the one they'll use most.

Cocktail syrup gift set

Rich demerara for Old Fashioneds, rosemary for gin and tonics and spritzes, and cranberry for holiday sours. Tuck in a recipe card with one drink per syrup and a jigger or a cocktail book.

Tea and toddy set

Honey syrup, ginger syrup and chai syrup, with a box of loose tea. Honey and ginger keep about 2–3 weeks, so give this one close to the date you make it.

A shelf-stable syrup kit

If you need a gift that keeps for months or can ship easily, give the ingredients instead of the syrup. Fill a jar with 1 cup of sugar and whole spices, such as 2 cinnamon sticks, 4 cloves, 2 star anise and a strip of dried orange peel. Tie on a tag: "Simmer with 1 cup water for 5 minutes, steep 30 minutes, strain, refrigerate." Dried lavender or hibiscus also work. Because everything is dry, the kit keeps in the pantry for months.

Bottles, sizes and packaging

  • 8.5 oz (250 ml) swing-top bottles are the classic gift size: big enough to use, small enough to finish before the syrup fades.
  • 4 oz (120 ml) bottles work for a sampler set of three or four flavors.
  • Glass only. It can be sterilized, it looks better, and it doesn't hold old smells.
  • Sterilize every bottle in boiling water or a hot dishwasher cycle, and fill through a clean funnel. Our bottle guide covers cleaning step by step.

One 1:1 batch made with 2 cups of sugar and 2 cups of water yields about 3 cups (720 ml), enough for nearly three 8.5 oz bottles. For ten bottles, dissolve about 7 cups of sugar in 7 cups of water, or let the calculator work it out by bottle size.

Labels: what to print

The free label maker prints the flavor and date on 2-inch round labels or plain paper. Every gift bottle should carry:

  • The flavor, and the base: "rich 2:1" or "made with honey."
  • The date made and a use-by date.
  • "Keep refrigerated", because people assume syrup is shelf-stable like store-bought.
  • Allergens, especially nuts in orgeat or hazelnut syrup.
  • One way to use it, like "2 tbsp per latte" or "¾ oz in a Whiskey Sour."

A kraft tag with a short recipe on the back makes the gift feel finished. More packaging ideas are on the labels and gifting gear page, and ready-made gift ideas for coffee and cocktail lovers are on the gifts page.

A simple timeline

  1. Two weeks before: buy bottles, print labels and pick your flavors.
  2. One week before: make long-keeping syrups like rich, demerara and peppermint.
  3. Two to three days before: make the 3-week syrups, such as vanilla, gingerbread and cranberry. Herb syrups go last.
  4. Bottle while warm into sterilized bottles, cap, cool and refrigerate.
  5. The day of: label, box and hand over, with a reminder to refrigerate.

Shipping and travel

Hand-deliver syrup if you can. If you must ship, choose rich 2:1 or demerara syrups, which tolerate a few days in transit best. Send early in the week so packages don't sit over a weekend, wrap bottles well and ask the recipient to refrigerate on arrival. For long distances, send the shelf-stable kit instead.

FAQ

What syrups make the best gifts?

Choose syrups that keep at least 3 weeks: rich simple syrup, demerara, peppermint, vanilla, gingerbread, cinnamon, chai, cranberry or grenadine. Avoid purée and soft-herb syrups, which last only a week.

How far ahead can I make syrup gifts?

Make most syrups no more than a week before you give them, so the recipient gets most of the shelf life. Rich and demerara syrups can be made up to two weeks ahead.

Do homemade syrup gifts need to be refrigerated?

Yes. Homemade syrups contain no preservatives, so keep them cold until you give them and label each bottle "keep refrigerated."

What size bottle is best for gifting syrup?

An 8.5 oz (250 ml) swing-top bottle is the most popular gift size. For sampler sets with three or four flavors, 4 oz (120 ml) bottles work well.

Can I mail homemade syrup?

You can, but hand delivery is safer. If you ship, choose rich syrups, send early in the week, pack well and ask the recipient to refrigerate it right away. A dry spice-and-sugar kit is the easiest option for long distances.
