Where it comes from
The modern version was worked out by bartenders Bobby Lozoff and Billy Rice at the Trident in Sausalito in the early 1970s and went national after the Rolling Stones took it up on their 1972 U.S. tour. An earlier Tequila Sunrise from Phoenix's Arizona Biltmore, credited to Gene Sulit in the 1930s or '40s, was a different drink of tequila, crème de cassis, lime and soda.
