Real grenadine is pomegranate syrup: pomegranate juice and sugar warmed together until dissolved, with optional pomegranate molasses and orange blossom water.

As printed: grenadine

Where it comes from

Applejack's signature cocktail was being poured at Eberlin's in lower Manhattan by the 1890s and first appeared in print in 1908, sweetened with raspberry syrup; by 1914 grenadine had replaced it. The name is usually read as 'jack' for applejack plus the drink's rosy color, though competing stories credit a New Jersey bartender.
