The syrup
In this recipe
Ginger Syrup¾ oz22 ml
Ginger syrup is sugar dissolved into fresh ginger juice for real heat, or simmered with sliced ginger for mellow warmth.
3/4 oz of our 1:1 ginger syrup has about the sugar of 3-4 oz of craft ginger beer; ATK uses more because its syrup is made less sweet
As printed: 3 oz (90 ml) ginger beer in the classic; ATK: 1 1/2 oz ginger syrup + 5 oz seltzer; Harry's: 1/2 oz ginger simple syrup + 2 oz soda
Where it comes from
The usual story puts its creation at the Cock 'n' Bull in Los Angeles in 1941, when Smirnoff's John G. Martin and owner Jack Morgan combined their slow-selling vodka and ginger beer. The bar's head bartender, Wes Price, also claimed it. The copper mug became its trademark.
