The syrup
In this recipe
Classic Simple Syrup¾ oz22 ml
Simple syrup is equal parts sugar and water, heated just until the sugar dissolves.
3/4 oz 1:1 simple syrup replaces the 2 tsp sugar and dissolves instantly.
As printed: 2 tsp white cane sugar mixed with mint sprigs and lime juice in the glass (IBA; Punch also uses 2 tsp sugar). Imbibe and Kindred use 1:1 simple syrup (1/2 oz and 1 oz).
Or use
Mint Simple Syrup¾ oz22 ml
Mint simple syrup is 1:1 sugar syrup flavored with fresh spearmint.
Swap 1:1 for the simple syrup to deepen the mint, but still press 4-6 fresh leaves in the glass. The syrup adds to the muddled mint; it does not replace the fresh aroma or the look of the leaves.
As printed: Plain sugar plus muddled fresh mint; no source uses a mint syrup.
Where it comes from
The drink descends from older Cuban mixes of cane spirit, sugar and lime. The first printed Mojito recipes appeared in Havana bar books between 1929 and 1932 (Juan A. Lasa's Libro de Cocktail in 1929, then Sloppy Joe's bar booklet in 1931-32), and the drink took off in the U.S. in the early 2000s.
